We are sorry to have to tell you that our father, Leon Mestel, died peacefully in his sleep at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, on Friday, 15 September.

The funeral will take place this coming Tuesday, 19 September at 9:00 am at Newmarket Road Cemetery, Cambridge CB5 8PE. Parking is available at the cemetery (off Ditton Lane) and on Ditton Lane itself.

There will be refreshments afterwards at 1 Highsett, Hills Road, Cambridge CB2 1NX (01223 355233) to which all are invited.

Because of the early time of the funeral, we appreciate that not everyone who wishes to attend will be able to do so, in which case please do come directly to 1 Highsett from about 11:00 am onwards.

There is limited parking available on residential streets near Highsett. The Cambridge Station car park is 10 mins walk as is the Queen Anne Terrace car park on Gonville Place. Access to Highsett is from either Tenison Avenue or Hills Road. A member of the family will be on hand to assist with the pedestrian access code from Hills Road, which is the closer entrance.

According to Jewish tradition, there are no flowers at the funeral. The funeral service begins inside the chapel with both Hebrew and English components. Everyone then accompanies the coffin to the graveside for the burial itself, a walk of about 200 yards. Traditionally, all are invited to assist symbolically with the covering of the coffin with earth. We then return to the chapel for the final part of the service.

Men should have their heads covered – a hat or cap is fine. Traditional coverings will be provided for those without. Everyone is very welcome, and nobody should feel apprehensive at the unfamiliar ritual. Equally, please do not feel in any way obligated to attend if it is inconvenient.

Donations are welcome to Age UK: www.ageuk.org.uk, the Stroke Association: www.stroke.org.uk, or another suitable charity of your choosing.

In addition, formal evening prayers (shiva) will be recited at 7:15 pm on Tuesday, 19 September, also at 1 Highsett. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome, especially if you are unable to make the earlier parts of the funeral.

All the very best

Ben, Jonathan, Leo, and Rosie Mestel
